Siteground vs Namehero – My verdict

Well, there were days when Siteground was considered one of the biggest and most reliable hosting providers, but now days they seem to have lost their prestige. Even though their service has become worse, Namehero continues to earn customers trust and become a reliable web hosting provider at affordable pricing, unlike Siteground’s renewed skyrocketing pricing hike.

Summary:

  • Speed: SiteGround outperforms NameHero in speed, with the fastest loading time at 0.3 seconds compared to NameHero’s 1.6 seconds. Even with a more complex WordPress installation, SiteGround maintains a fast loading time of 0.8 seconds, whereas NameHero’s quickest is 1.6 seconds.

  • Geographical Performance: SiteGround shows consistent performance across different locations, with results in London and Mumbai still under 1 second, which is impressive. NameHero’s performance doesn’t show such detailed location-based testing, but its overall speed is slower.

  • Uptime: NameHero has a slightly better uptime guarantee of 99.9%.

Overall, SiteGround is superior in terms of speed, especially when considering geographical performance and handling more complex websites.

Server Response Time:

  • NameHero excels in US regions with low SRTs of 24 ms (East) and 76 ms (West), ensuring quick access and minimal latency for North American users. However, the absence of data centers in Asia results in higher SRTs, such as 270 ms in Mumbai.

Speed Test Results:

  • NameHero performs well in locations like New York with 733.67 ms response times, leveraging technologies like Litespeed cache for optimized performance. Yet, speeds in Bangalore are slower at 4.72 seconds, indicating a need for improved global content delivery strategies.

Uptime Reliability:

  • SiteGround emerges as a leader with an impressive uptime guarantee and actual performance of 99.99%, significantly reducing downtime to a minimal 52 minutes per year. This reliability ensures consistent availability and minimal disruption for users globally.

Choosing the Right Provider

  • For US-Centric Users: NameHero offers excellent server response times and speed test results, ideal for users primarily located in North America.

  • For Global Reach and Reliability: SiteGround’s unparalleled uptime performance makes it a reliable choice for users requiring consistent availability and minimal downtime, regardless of geographical location.

When considering between NameHero and SiteGround, prioritize based on your specific needs for speed, global reach, and uptime reliability. NameHero excels in local speed and performance optimizations, while SiteGround guarantees exceptional uptime for global accessibility and reliability.

Load Testing

For websites expecting high traffic and potential spikes, a robust architecture is essential for uninterrupted operation. To assess this, I conducted load testing on both my NameHero and SiteGround sites.

In the load testing, NameHero achieved 48 ms for Clients Per Test (1000 Clients in 1 Minute) and 59 ms for Maintain Client Load (500 Clients in 1 Minute). Meanwhile, SiteGround scored 45 ms for Clients Per Test and 201 ms for Maintain Client Load under similar conditions.

From these results, it’s evident that NameHero exhibits superior load handling capacity compared to SiteGround.

Global TTFB

Assessing the Global TTFB (Time To First Byte) is crucial to evaluate a service’s performance across diverse global locations, particularly for sites reliant on global traffic. Recently, I conducted a Global TTFB test on my demo sites across ten global locations.

For my NameHero site, the average TTFB stood at 433.24 ms, showcasing consistent performance across various global locations. Notably, the lowest TTFB was recorded in New York at 100.57 ms, while the highest TTFB occurred in Bangalore at 721.32 ms.

In contrast, my SiteGround site displayed an average TTFB of 861.03 ms, with notable variations across global locations. Surprisingly, TTFB exceeded 1 second in four locations. The lowest TTFB was observed in New York at 287.97 ms, whereas the highest TTFB was recorded in Frankfurt, exceeding 1.66 seconds. Consequently, SiteGround’s Global TTFB performance fell short, highlighting NameHero’s consistent and impressive TTFB across all global locations.

Core Web Vitals

Examining the Core Web Vitals of both services is crucial in determining the support they offer to websites in delivering optimal user experiences.

In recent tests, my NameHero site displayed a ‘Largest Contentful Paint’ of 0.653s, ‘Total Blocking Time’ of 0.000s, and ‘Cumulative Layout Shift’ of 0. Conversely, my SiteGround site showed a ‘Largest Contentful Paint’ of 0.876s, ‘Total Blocking Time’ of 0.006s, and ‘Cumulative Layout Shift’ of 0.

Based on these results, it’s evident that NameHero outperforms SiteGround in terms of Core Web Vitals, indicating better support for enhancing user experiences.

Namehero vs Siteground: Backup feature

NameHero’s “Starter Cloud” plan offers superior backup features compared to SiteGround’s StartUp plan. NameHero allows all users to take snapshots of their entire website on demand, while SiteGround limits this functionality to their GrowBig and GoGeek plans.

Recently, Ryan Gray, CEO of NameHero, upgraded their backup system with JetBackup, making the process automatic. This improvement, coupled with offsite backups, enhances NameHero’s backup capabilities. However, unlike SiteGround, NameHero only offers daily and weekly restore options, while SiteGround provides access to the last 30 daily backups on higher-tier plans.

Offsite Backup Advantage:

An outstanding benefit of NameHero is that their backups are stored offsite, offering an extra layer of security. Although not explicitly mentioned on their website, CEO Ryan Gray confirmed that backups are maintained on a separate network in a different data center, reducing the risk of data loss. SiteGround also offers offsite backups by default, eliminating the need for their separate service, VaultPress.

NameHero’s Partnership with DropMySite:

NameHero’s collaboration with DropMySite provides users with affordable backup services from a third party if needed. This partnership offers an alternative to CodeGuard and Jetpack. Compared to SiteGround’s VaultPress integration, DropMySite is considered more cost-effective.

Backup Ratings:

– NameHero: ★★★★☆ (4/5)

– SiteGround: ★★★★★ (5/5)

SiteGround holds a slight advantage due to its 30-day automatic backup retention, while NameHero offers 7-day backups. Additionally, SiteGround now stores its backups offsite, (Now Namehero gives you free daily backup)

    • Offers security options like hiding WordPress version, two-step verification, and post-hack actions for recovery and prevention.

Comparison:

  • Two Factor Authentication (2FA): Both NameHero and SiteGround offer 2FA, ensuring secure login procedures. However, NameHero’s integration with various authenticator apps like Google Authenticator or Duo provides flexibility and reliability.

  • SSL Certificates: NameHero includes free SSL certificates for all domains and sub-domains, whereas SiteGround also provides SSL but with additional focus on proprietary security plugins rather than emphasizing widespread free SSL availability.

  • Firewall and Malware Protection: While SiteGround offers a dedicated Security Optimizer plugin for WordPress users, NameHero’s Imunify360 provides a broader range of protection against various cyber threats such as DDoS attacks and malware, covering all hosting servers comprehensively.

Server Caching: NameHero vs SiteGround

Server caching is a crucial feature for improving website performance, and both NameHero and SiteGround offer server-level caching solutions.

SiteGround provides a caching service called “SuperCacher,” which was initially limited to GrowBig and GoGeek plans but has since been expanded to the StartUp plan after recent price adjustments. While both hosts require you to install a plugin like W3 Total Cache or WP Rocket Cache for platforms like WordPress, the actual caching work is handled by the server.

NameHero, on the other hand, offers server-level caching out of the box due to its utilization of LiteSpeed. This means you don’t need to install additional plugins for caching, which can slow down your site. Additionally, NameHero has integrated with QUIC.cloud, a feature similar to Cloudflare but with the added capability of caching entire websites, including static HTML content.

Server Caching: NameHero vs SiteGround

The integration with QUIC.cloud is a significant advantage for NameHero, as it enhances server caching and improves website performance even further. In contrast, SiteGround does not offer a similar feature.

Siteground vs Namehero: CDN

QUIC.cloud’s CDN, tailor-made for LiteSpeed, boasts over 70 Points of Presence (PoPs) even on its standard plan. With features like HTTP/3 support, DDoS protection, firewall, and robust image optimization tools, it’s a formidable option.

Comparing QUIC.cloud’s free and paid plans to SiteGround’s CDN reveals a stark contrast. SiteGround’s CDN offers only 14 PoPs and limited image optimizations, paling in comparison to QUIC.cloud’s comprehensive feature set. While both CDNs cache HTML for improved Time to First Byte (TTFB) globally, SiteGround’s dynamic caching feature is restricted to paid plans.

When it comes to data center locations, SiteGround takes the lead with its extensive presence, especially due to its Singapore data center. SiteGround currently operates in seven locations:

– Iowa, US

– Madrid, Spain

– London, UK

– Frankfurt, Germany

– Eemshaven, Netherlands

– Sydney, Australia

On the other hand, NameHero has data centers on two continents:

NameHero JetBackup vs SiteGround Backups

The NameHero “Starter Cloud” plan offers more robust backup functionality compared to SiteGround’s StartUp plan. Unlike SiteGround, which limits snapshot capabilities to its GrowBig and GoGeek plans, NameHero allows all users to take snapshots of their entire website on demand.

Recently, Ryan Gray enhanced NameHero’s backup system by integrating JetBackup, automating the entire backup process. This improvement ensures backups are performed automatically without requiring manual requests. Additionally, NameHero stores backups offsite, a feature not explicitly highlighted on their website but confirmed by CEO Ryan Gray. This offsite storage in a separate data center mitigates risks similar to those experienced by A2 Hosting in 2019.

Moreover, NameHero offers integration with DropMySite for affordable third-party backup services, emphasizing flexibility and cost-effectiveness compared to alternatives like CodeGuard and Jetpack.

In terms of backup ratings, NameHero receives 4 out of 5 stars (★★★★☆) due to its daily and weekly restore options, while SiteGround, with its 30-day automatic backup retention and offsite storage, earns a perfect 5 out of 5 stars (★★★★★). Therefore, despite NameHero’s strengths in offsite storage and accessibility, SiteGround edges ahead due to its longer backup retention period and similar offsite backup practices.

Both NameHero and SiteGround provide free automated daily backups on all plans, ensuring worry-free hosting with easy restoration options.

FAQ: Namehero vs Siteground

What is the difference between SiteGround and NameHero?

When comparing SiteGround and NameHero, it’s clear that NameHero’s plans stand out with more competitive pricing and valuable features. Their starter plans begin at a lower price point and include significant advantages like unlimited NVMe storage, making them a compelling choice for many users.

Is NameHero better than SiteGround?

NameHero’s speed, servers, support, and pricing are arguably better than SiteGround. Even though SiteGround is more popular, that doesn’t mean they’re the better choice.

2. Which is faster – NameHero or SiteGround?

NameHero uses LiteSpeed which is faster than Nginx (what SiteGround uses). LiteSpeed Cache is also faster than SiteGround Optimizer, and QUIC.cloud is faster than SiteGround’s CDN with more PoPs and full page caching. NameHero uses NVMe SSDs on higher plans while SiteGround doesn’t. Just based on specs alone, NameHero is faster than SiteGround.

3. Is NameHero or SiteGround better for WordPress?

NameHero is a good choice if you want cPanel, cheaper prices, and the option to use LiteSpeed Cache + QUIC.cloud CDN. SiteGround says they’ve crafted their service and Site Tools dashboard for WordPress, but that doesn’t mean they’re better.
